How To Upgrade Linksys Router’s Firmware

To upgrade the Firmware, you need to perform six steps:

Step 1: Verify the model and version number of your Linksys router.

Step 2: To go to the Linksys Support page and download the Firmware. Save it on your computer.

Step 3: If the firmware file you have downloaded is on a zip format, double-click on the zip file and extract its contents to a single folder or to the Desktop.

Step 4: Access the router’s web-based setup page. Open IE type http://192.168.1.1, type ‘admin’ for password. When the router’s web-based setup page appears, click Administration then Config Management, look for Backup Configuration then click Backup.

Click Save in the File Download dialog box that appears. Look for the Save As dialog box, choose a location for the file like the Desktop and click Save. When the download is complete, click Close, if prompted.

Step 5: Go back to the router’s Administration page and click Firmware Upgrade. When the Upgrade Firmware opens, click Browse. Look for the .bin file to upgrade the router’s firmware.

NOTE: If the upgrading process failed, do the following:

Ensure the firmware is appropriate for your device.

Hard reset the router for 30 sec.

Upgrade again the router’s firmware.

Step 6: Reset the router for 30 sec. then reboot.

Step 7: Restore the Router’s settings. Access the router’s web-based setup page. Open IE type http://192.168.1.1, type ‘admin’ for password. When the Config Management screen appears, look for Restore Configuration then click Browse. Browse to the location where the configuration file was saved and select the Config.bin file. When the file is selected, click Open.

Upgrade successful.

  1. I work for Linksys. It’s really advisable to upgrade the router’s firmware and while you’re at it, why not secure your wireless network as well? There are also times when the firmware upgrade won’t work. Re-flushing the firmware might fix the problem. Also if the password “admin” won’t work because you might have used a different password/username while using the setup cd, hard reset for 10-15 seconds will do the job and you just have to reconfigure your settings again. It takes 5-10 minutes only.
